Whidbey Audubon is inviting the community to join us as we celebrate the beginnings of our chapter. Twenty-five years ago a few dedicated individuals set about to establish a new chapter of Audubon on Whidbey Island with seed money from Hazel Wolf, a dedicated environmentalist.
Hazel's work as the Johnny Appleseed of Washington Audubon was instrumental in creating a number of chapters throughout the state of Washington during this time. Hazel and those first members worked hard to create a movement whose mission is to "Conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds other animals and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth's diversity."
A lot has happened during the last twenty-five years. This celebration is our opportunity to recognize those who have come before. They have paved the way for the present and the future of protecting wildlife on Whidbey Island.
Our members are involved in a number of activities which are open to the community. We have an active conservation committee, birding classes, field trips, a school age education program, we participate in the national Audubon Christmas bird count and an annual fundraising birdathon. We present guest speakers at our monthly member meetings which are held from September through June. Please come and be part of the fun and festivities we have planned for you. We look forward to seeing you there.
